What does location tracking do?
The OptimoRoute Driver app uses location tracking to share a driver’s real-time position while they are working on a route.
This enables OptimoRoute to:
Show the driver’s live location in the dispatcher web app
Display route breadcrumbs in live tracking and plan history
Provide more accurate ETAs to customers
Send “Driver On the Way” notifications
Allow drivers to use OptimoRoute Truck Navigation
Automatically start and end service using geofencing
Capture actual start and end locations for orders

Location sharing can be disabled by admins or drivers. If location permissions are turned off on the driver's device or in the app, some of these features may not function as expected.. |
Location tracking settings
By default, drivers can choose their location preferences. However, admins can set up account defaults for how driver locations are managed.
To do this:
- Go to Administration → Settings
- From the left menu, choose Driver app → Configuration
- Scroll down to “Location tracking”
- Choose the option that works for your team
|
|
The OptimoRoute Driver app will only track location data when the driver is marked as “On Duty”. |
Disabling tracking from the mobile app
The option to “Allow drivers to choose their preferences for “On Duty” location tracking” means that drivers can go to their OptimoRoute Driver app and disable location tracking if they want to.
To enable or disable GPS tracking:
- Open the OptimoRoute Driver app on your phone
- Go to “Settings” in the bottom right corner
- Under “Location Tracking”, toggle the switch on to disable tracking
App Permissions
When location tracking is enabled, drivers must allow location access on their phone and set it to “Always.” This allows the Driver app to send location updates while running in the background, for example when a third-party navigation app is being used at the same time.

Location tracking automatically stops when the driver switches their status to “Off Duty”. |
Location tracking and analytics reporting
Location tracking data is used to gather route insights and performance metrics in OptimoRoute, such as breadcrumbs, actual travel times, route distances, service times, and driver activity.
To ensure accurate data collection, drivers should go "On Duty" when they are ready to start driving their route and switch "Off Duty" once their work is complete.
Staying On Duty outside of active route time may result in inaccurate tracking data and affect reporting.
