Breadcrumb routes appear as dotted lines and allow you to see where your drivers actually went vs. what was planned on a live route. In this article, we will show you how to use and view breadcrumbs.

What are breadcrumbs?
Breadcrumbs allow you to track where drivers actually went when out in the field. This is shown as a dotted line on the live map. This requires your drivers to be using the OptimoRoute driver app.
Viewing breadcrumb routes
Breadcrumb routes are automatically calculated when a plan is live and your drivers are using the OptimoRoute Driver App to send their location data from their devices.
To view breadcrumb routes:
- Start a live plan
- Go to the "Live" tab
- On the left of the map, under "Show route", choose either "Actual" or "Both"
Route types
Under the "Show route" area, there are three visualization options: Planned, Actual, or Both.
- Planned (default) shows the planned route represented by colored lines
- Actual shows only the breadcrumb routes represented by a thin dotted line and shows where your drivers actually are
- Both shows both planned routes and breadcrumb routes, which is useful for comparison
Viewing time of day on route
Breadcrumbs also contain the time of day at a specific location. This allows you as a dispatcher to understand where a driver was or should have been at a particular time of day on their route.
To view time of day on breadcrumb routes:
- Go to the "Live" tab
- On the left of the map, under "Show route", choose which view you want
- On the map, click directly on a point on the route, either actual or planned
A small indicator will appear with the driver name and the time of day of that particular location on the route.
Breadcrumbs in reporting
Breadcrumb routes are also available in analytics reports, specifically the "Plan History" report. This allows you to see breadcrumbs routes superimposed on planned routes from previous days.
To access this information:
- Go to the "Analytics" tab
- Click on the last item of the left menu called "Plan History"
This will show you your plan history for any given day in the past.
Alternatively, you can use a shortcut in the "Live tab". Click on "View History" to the left of the map, and it will take you directly to the "Analytics" tab with your date opened.
Filtering
You can configure the Breadcrumbs history shown on the map with two filters (under the Menu), depending on what you want to analyze:
- Plan date: Click on the calendar symbol and select the date that you would like to view.
- Driver/s: You can select one driver or multiple drivers from the list under Plan date.
- Order Status: Use the filters under the map to drill down into specific order statuses
- Running late: Use the filters under the map to see which orders were running late
- POD Exceptions: Use the filters under the map to see only those with POD exceptions
- Search Bar: For all other filtering needs, use the search bar to locate specific orders
