Use breadcrumb routes to compare where a driver actually traveled with their planned route. In this article, you’ll learn how to view and use breadcrumb routes.

What are breadcrumbs?
Breadcrumbs show the path a driver actually traveled while completing a route. They appear as a dotted line on the "Live" map, so you can compare the driver’s actual path with the planned route.

Viewing breadcrumb routes
OptimoRoute automatically creates breadcrumb routes when a plan is live and drivers use the OptimoRoute Driver App to send location data from their devices.
To view breadcrumb routes:
- Start a live plan
- Go to the "Live" tab
- On the left of the map, under "Show route", choose either "Actual" or "Both"

Breadcrumbs may be missing or incomplete if a driver has poor signal, goes off-duty, or does not allow background location access. If background location access is not allowed, tracking stops when the driver leaves the OptimoRoute Driver app. This includes when the driver switches to a third-party navigation app. |
Live dashboard route types
Under “Show route,” choose how routes appear on the live map:

| Planned | The planned route, shown as colored lines. This is the default view. |
| Actual | The breadcrumb route, shown as a thin dotted line. This shows where the driver actually traveled. |
| Both | The planned and breadcrumb routes together so you can compare them. |
Viewing time of day on route
You can check the time a driver was at, or was planned to be at, a specific location on their route.
To view the time:
- Go to the “Live” tab.
- Under “Show route,” select the route view you want.
- Click a point on the actual or planned route.
An indicator appears with the driver’s name and the actual or planned time at that location.
View breadcrumbs from previous routes
Use the “Plan History” report to view breadcrumb routes from previous days. You can compare the actual breadcrumb route with the planned route on the map.
To view historical breadcrumbs:
- Go to “Analytics”
- Select “Plan History” from the left menu.
- Select the day you want to review.
The map shows the route information for the selected day, including the planned and breadcrumb routes.
You can also open route history directly from the “Live” tab:
- Click “View History” to the left of the map.
- OptimoRoute opens “Analytics → Plan History” with the selected date already open.
Filter route history
Use filters to narrow down the route history shown on the map:
- Plan date: Click the calendar icon and select the date you want to view.
- Drivers: Select one or more drivers from the list below “Plan date.”
- Order status: Filter orders by their status.
- Running late: Show orders that were running late.
- POD Exceptions: Show orders with POD exceptions.
- Search bar: Search for a specific order.
