OptimoRoute supports built-in commercial truck navigation so drivers can follow routes that account for commercial vehicle restrictions. This article explains how to set up commercial truck navigation for your drivers.

What is commercial truck navigation?
Commercial truck navigation is built into the OptimoRoute Driver app. It gives drivers turn-by-turn directions for routes planned for commercial vehicles.
Navigation can account for truck-specific restrictions, including:
- Road restrictions
- Weight limits
- Tunnel and bridge restrictions
- Hazardous material restrictions
Because routing and navigation are connected in OptimoRoute, drivers can follow the commercial truck routes prepared by dispatchers without switching to a separate navigation app. This can also help keep ETAs aligned with the planned route.

What you need to use OptimoRoute Navigation
- Drivers need the OptimoRoute Driver app version 2.21.1 or above on their mobile devices
- Drivers need to be assigned commercial truck routes
Setting GPS navigation for drivers
Drivers can choose OptimoRoute Navigation in the Driver app settings. Admins can also set the navigation tool for drivers from the web app.
To set the GPS navigation tool for drivers from the web app:
- Go to Administration→Mobile Apps
- In the left menu, choose “Activation & status”
- Choose the drivers you want to set navigation for
- Click “Set navigation”
- Select “OptimoRoute Navigation”
- Click “Save”
OptimoRoute Navigation will now open by default when drivers have commercial truck routes assigned. Drivers can still change their navigation choice in the Driver app settings.
| If a navigation option appears in italics and is grayed out, the setting has not been applied yet. This can happen if the driver is offline or is using an older version of the Driver app. |
You can also set navigation for one driver at a time. Select the "Navigation" column for that driver, then choose an option from the dropdown.
If a driver changes their default navigation in the Driver app, the "Navigation" column updates to show their selection.

Setting up navigation for new driver app installations
Admins can set the default navigation option for newly activated Driver app installations.
To define the initial navigation setting:
- Go to Administration→Settings
- Go to Driver app→Configuration
- Scroll to find the "Navigation" section
- Choose the "Initial navigation setting"
- Click "Save"
The selected navigation option will be used by default for newly installed Driver apps.
Using GPS navigation
Drivers can use OptimoRoute Navigation to follow commercial truck routes directly in the Driver app. Navigation includes turn-by-turn directions, voice instructions, ETA, and the remaining time and distance to the next destination. Drivers can also view the full route from the navigation screen.
If OptimoRoute needs to recalculate the route during navigation, it continues to account for supported commercial truck routing restrictions.
