What is order type?
Order type tells OptimoRoute what kind of work an order represents.
You can use these order types:
- "Delivery" — An order where the driver delivers goods or materials
- "Pickup" — An order where the driver picks up goods or materials
- "Task" — An order for other types of work, such as a service visit or inspection
You may also see “Depot” and “Break” as order types on a route. OptimoRoute adds these automatically to represent depot visits and breaks for drivers. These cannot be selected manually.
How order type affects routing
Order type tells OptimoRoute what kind of work is being done at a stop. It can also affect vehicle loads and when depot visits are needed during route planning.
| Order type | Use it for | Effect on vehicle load |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Delivering a physical item to a location. | Vehicle load decreases as deliveries are completed. |
| Pick Up | Collecting a physical item and loading it onto the vehicle. | Vehicle load increases as pickups are completed. |
| Task | Work that does not necessarily involve moving a physical item, such as a service visit. | Vehicle load decreases as deliveries are completed. |
| Linked Pick up and delivery pairs | Items that need to be picked up in one location and delivered to another during the same route without passing by the depot. | Vehicle load increases when pick up is completed and decreases when delivery are completed. |
|
|
Link Pickup and Delivery orders when they are part of the same job. OptimoRoute uses this relationship when planning the orders. |
Depot visits
Order type can also determine whether OptimoRoute needs to add a depot visit to the route:
- Delivery: The vehicle must visit a depot where it can load before completing the delivery.
- Pick Up: The vehicle must visit a depot where it can unload after completing the pickup.
- Task: Follows the same depot behavior as a "Delivery" if capacities are used.
- Linked Pick Up and Delivery: A linked pickup and delivery pair does not require a depot visit between the two orders.
"Depot" stops are automatically inserted by OptimoRoute based on your planning settings.

Not every depot type supports loading or unloading. A route start or end location that cannot load or unload may not meet the depot requirement for a Delivery, Pick Up, or Task. Learn more, about depot types and mid-route loading and unloading here.. |
