What is clustering?
Clustering is a route optimization option that attempts to group orders by location. It helps reduce route overlap and keeps routes in separate geographic areas when other planning limits allow it.
However it is important to note that clustering might be affected by other settings that prevent routes from being fully separated. These include:
- Time windows
- Driver availability
- Vehicle capacity
- Driver assignments
- Service areas
- Order priorities
- Skills
- Vehicle features
- Other planning limits
OptimoRoute does not use clustering by default because routes may be more efficient without it. Allowing some overlap can reduce travel time or distance.
However, routes with less overlap can be easier for dispatchers to manage and easier for drivers to follow.

Using clustering in route optimization
To plan route with clustering:
- Make sure clustering is enabled for your account
- Go to “Plan & Optimize”
- Click “Plan Routes”
- Select the option “Prefer orders to be clustered”
- Update any other planning settings as needed
- Click “Plan routes”
OptimoRoute plans the routes with a preference for grouping nearby orders and reducing route overlap.
Results
When clustering is enabled, routes usually appear more clearly separated on the map, with nearby orders grouped together.
Some overlap may still occur. If it does, check the affected orders for other planning limits, such as time windows, driver assignments, skills, or vehicle requirements. These limits may take priority over geographic grouping.
