Best fit is a drag-and-drop planning method available in the timeline and on the map. This article explains how it works.

What is "best fit" with drag and drop?
Best fit helps you move orders to another route with drag and drop without choosing their exact position.
For example: When you drag an order onto a driver’s name in the timeline, OptimoRoute checks the assigned route and places the order in the best available position. It recalculates the route so you can see how the change affects the schedule.
You can use best fit to:
- Move an order to another driver.
- Add an unscheduled order to a route.
- Move multiple or grouped orders.
- Adjust routes without planning all routes again.
Best fit uses OptimoRoute’s routing algorithm and respects any constraints you have. Review the updated route before saving or sending changes to drivers.
Planning with best fit
To best fit stops:
- Go to the "Plan and Optimize" tab
- Select an order or set of orders from either the map or timeline
- Drag them to the driver's name on the timeline or to a place on the route on the map
- Release your mouse
A black dot will appear to let you know where you will be moving the orders to, along with a tool tip that will tell you that you will be performing a best fit action. For example, "Best fit into a route."
Breaking constraints
Best fit may not move every order to the selected driver or route. This usually happens when the move would break a planning limit.
When using best fit, OptimoRoute checks these limits:
- Time windows
- Work time
- Load capacities
- Skills
- Vehicle features
- Service areas
- Maximum distance
- Check-in times
- Priority
- Business hours
When a move breaks a limit, OptimoRoute shows a warning. The message explains which limit was broken and why the order could not be moved to the selected route or position.
This message will also appear on the map:
