Routing profiles let you set vehicle characteristics that OptimoRoute considers when planning and optimizing routes. Use them when different vehicles have different routing requirements. This article explains how to create routing profiles and assign them to vehicles.

What are routing profiles?
Routing profiles are sets of routing constraints that tell OptimoRoute how a vehicle can travel when planning routes. They help OptimoRoute choose roads and sequence orders based on the needs of different vehicles.
A routing profile can control:
- The type of vehicle being routed, such as a car or commercial truck
- Whether to avoid tolls or ferries
- Whether drivers should avoid U-turns and crossing the street
- Whether routing should use the exact service location or the nearest roadside point
For example, you could create one profile for cars that can use all roads and another for vehicles that should avoid toll roads.
Each vehicle can have a routing profile assigned to it. Vehicles without a specific profile use the default routing profile.
Default routing profile
The default routing profile applies when a specific routing profile has not been assigned. By default, it uses these settings:
Vehicle type: Car. This means commercial truck restrictions do not apply.
- Tolls and ferries: Use all roads. OptimoRoute does not avoid tolls or ferries.
- Driver approach: Without restrictions. OptimoRoute does not avoid U-turns or crossing the street.
- Service location: Service at location. OptimoRoute routes to the location pin instead of the nearest roadside point.
To change the default routing profile:
- Go to “Administration → Settings.”
- Select “Route & Planning” from the left menu.
- Select “Routing Profiles.”
- Change the routing options as needed.
- Click “Save.”
The updated settings are used when planning routes that use the default routing profile.

Creating routing profiles
You can create multiple routing profiles for vehicles with different routing needs. After you create a profile, you can assign it to the vehicles that should use those routing constraints.
To create a routing profile:
- Go to “Administration → Settings.”
- Select “Route & Planning” from the left menu.
- Select “Routing Profiles.”
- Click “Add profile.”
- Enter a name for the profile.
- Choose the routing options you want to use.
- Click “Save.”
The routing profile is now available to assign to vehicles.
Routing profile options
Routing profile options control how OptimoRoute plans routes for vehicles using that profile.
Vehicle type
Choose the type of vehicle OptimoRoute should account for when planning routes. Vehicle type can affect which roads OptimoRoute uses based on vehicle or road restrictions.
- Car: Routes on roads that allow standard-sized motor vehicles. Commercial truck restrictions do not apply.
- Commercial (Truck): Accounts for road restrictions that apply to commercial trucks. OptimoRoute uses a vehicle size of 12 ft 6 in (3.8 m) high, 8 ft 3 in (2.5 m) wide, 33 ft (10 m) long, and 33,000 lbs (15 tonnes) when planning routes.
- Hazardous material: Avoids roads where hazardous materials are not allowed.

Tolls and ferries
Choose whether OptimoRoute should avoid toll roads or ferries when planning routes.
- Use all roads: Allows OptimoRoute to use toll roads and ferries when finding the optimized route.
- Avoid tolls: Avoids toll roads when optimizing routes. Some free ferries may still be used.
- Avoid ferries: Avoids ferry crossings when optimizing routes. Toll roads may still be used.
Drivers approach locations
Choose how OptimoRoute should account for U-turns and crossing the street when planning how drivers approach stops.
- Without restrictions: Does not consider U-turns or crossing the street when planning routes.
- Avoid U-turns and crossing the street: Plans routes to avoid approaches that require drivers to make U-turns or cross the street to reach a stop.
Service location
Choose which point OptimoRoute should use when calculating the route sequence, travel time, and distance for a stop.
- Service at location: Uses the exact location pin. Location pins are generally placed in the center of the property.
- Roadside service: Uses the nearest point along the road, such as a driveway entrance. This is useful when drivers need to service a location from the roadside, such as for waste collection or residential deliveries.
Editing existing routing profiles
You can create multiple routing profiles that can applied to vehicles and are used as constraints when routing that particular vehicle.
To create a routing profile:
- Go to Administration→Settings
- Click “Route & Planning” from the left menu
- Select “Routing Profiles
- Choose the profile you want to edit
- Make your changes
- Click "Save"
Now any vehicles with this routing profile will have the updated settings.
You can also rename or delete any routing profile using the icons next to the name.
Assigning profiles to vehicles
Vehicles use the default routing profile unless you assign a different profile to them. If you have multiple routing profiles, you can assign the appropriate profile to each vehicle.
To assign a routing profile:
- Go to “Administration → Vehicles.”
- Select the vehicle or vehicles you want to edit.
- Click “Edit vehicles.”
- Go to the “Routing Profiles” section.
- Select the routing profile you want to assign.
- Click “Save.”
The selected vehicles will use the assigned routing profile when OptimoRoute plans routes.
